I installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 about a week ago on a partition from my Windows 10 OS. Since then, I have been able to successfully use Grub to choose either windows or Ubuntu to boot. Just now, however, I restarted and the Grub menu didn't appear. The bios menu also did not appear. It then booted straight into Ubuntu. This happened after I tried to hard restart with the power button and the prompt appeared suggesting that I save files first. My files were all saved, but I exited out and saved them all anyways, and then shut down just from the actual software option. Settings seem to have changed as well. For example, my desktop is now stuck at 1024x768, while before I was at 1920x1080. The only ...

Almost all security is a false sense of security. Not even the Pentagon can keep everyone out of their business.I know of no arrangement where a logged-in user who opens malware (inadvertently or not) is protected whether the home directory is encrypted or not. If the malware is ruing under the logged-in user's account, then the data is effectively not encrypted, because the encryption layer is transparent after the key is enabled. This is true for any operating system.Let's block ads! بخوانید...

Hi All,since there are media providers blocking data center IPs am no longer able to enjoy some services. I was a little bit upset, but then this idea hit me:I am still an owner of a VPS which I used as a VPN-Server/Gateway using PPTP. The idea is to set up Raspberry Pi which will be placed in a friends house and act like a gateway. (my friend has unfortunately a dynamic IP and does not agree to use any DynDNS services) I was thinking about creating a virtual adapter which will coect to my VPN-Server with a static IP on this Interface. The VPN Server will route the traffic from other clients through the Raspberry Pi at my friends house.Has anyone tried this yet? Would you recommend another s...

I just recently decided to give steam gaming on Ubuntu a try, so far the following games work perfect:-Payday2-Day of Infamy (uses Source engine)-Project Zomboid-Chivalry Medieval Warfare/Deadliest WarriorFor whatever reason CS:GO just doesn't...launch. My friend status changes for a split second to indicate I'm playing the game and then ... nothing. I keep an eye on Task Manager and don't ever see the process for CSGO come or go and at this point I've tried everything I know to do.I'm using an Nvidia GTX 760 with the 352.63 Drivers. I'm going to DL and try TF2 later on but I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction for debugging this or double-checking/updating some pa...

I'm a graphics designer and artist and I know jack about Gimp. I'm leaing, but in the mean time I really need access to Photoshop CC. I'd rather not go back to Windows if I can help it.I have it installed via PlayLinux, but there are no fonts on anything except the menu's. I also tried installing it with no fonts (a suggestion from another post), and it did not help.I'm plaing on converting to linux entirely, but this is my one issue that for years has stopped me. VM's don't work because there's no hardware acceleration, something I need.Would love some help figuring this out. Let's block ads! بخوانید...

I agree with the recommendation to have separate home partitions for each of the installed systems. (You can also have /home as directories inside the root directories.)If you want to share personal files (documents, music, multimedia files) I suggest that you have a separate data partition. When you have Windows alongside linux, it is a good idea to use the file system NTFS in the data partition to make it available for both linux and Windows. Otherwise you should use a linux file system (for example ext4).(Linux can also read and write the Windows [system] partition, but it is risky, it is better to have a separate data partition.) Hello.Am a Linux novice. Performed an on-line update from 14.04 to 16.04 on my laptop which is an Asus Ultrabook. It has an 1T SSD and is dual-boot with Windows 8.1 via grub. Have done the same upgrade on my Intel i7 desktop without issue. It however DOES NOT have an SSD.During boot, there are errors reported that I caot decipher and, I believe, has to do with Ubuntu recognizing my SSD (sd9?). It is a Corsair SSD. During boot it performs some sort of disk diag that runs for 1m 50s? Sometimes it won't boot at all and I have to do the three-finger-salute (control-alt-delete).Have a copy of my dmsg file and have attached it... (after I looked up where to find it)Again. It's an Asus Ultrabook S5...

Recently, I caught a virus on an old HTPC ruing windows 7. So, I decided to expand my horizons and try Ubuntu 16.04 LTS as I've started to lea some coding recently and thought it could be interesting. So far, it works great for Youtube and most other videos. However, you try to watch Hulu/HBOGo, and it's a no go. It just sits there at a black screen. I tried various solutions, like these:1.) https://www.maketecheasier.com/watch-hbo-now-ubuntu/ - gives a nice write-up and how to in order to get Firefox working using pipeline and a Flash version for windows (I think).2) http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2015/09/h...ubuntu-1404-up - talks about updating HAL and some other digital rights stuff (DRM), v...

Installed Ubuntu last night and have spent the last 10 hours today trying to get my old adapter working, alas I have given up. Does anybody know of a adapter that will just install and work without having to fiddle with anything? This seems to be the closest I have found, but it only mentions 15.10.My last attempt at solving my previous adapter can be found here, if you feel like helping that way.Thanks. Tonight I got a popup on my machines that says: New important security and hardware support update.WARNING: Security updates for your current Hardware Enablement Stack ended on 2016–08–04:* https://wiki.ubuntu.com/1404_HWE_EOL I thought 14.04 was supported for five years, and it looks like this is trying to force me to upgrade to 16.04 or else not get keel security update. I DO NOT wish to upgrade to 16.04 at this time for a couple of reasons, first I have seen too many reports of people having problems after an upgrade, but more important I am ruing an older version of Kodi and I do NOT want to be forced to upgrade that because it has some bugs I don't want to deal with.I really don't under...
