Hi,i have on my laptop Kubuntu since v14.04 and upgrade it to v16.04.Under ubuntu 14.04 and later 15.10 i had the standard saving energy tool for laptops and my computer was very quite and sometimes fan run high do to workload (which was normal).Since i upgrade it to 16.04, my CPU or Graphic fan runs at 100% (it seems at least based on the noise level) even if i do nothing and that laptop is on login screen.my CPU range is about 68C to 83-84C degrees max.For an unknown reason FAN runs at max and i dislike it especially when i do not require anything from it.Some people told me that room where i was was hot or that it is normal in summer.... the problem is that even in a room at 20C degrees i...

I am having this issue on a System76 Ratel, new this spring, ruing a 6th generation i5-6500 3.2GHz CPU, a Samsung 850 SSD, and the optional NVIDIA GeForce GT730 video subsystem. I updated to 16.04 about a month after it came out, with no issues.Recently while doing updates, I get the following message: Code: W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/kbl_dmc_ver1.bin for module i915_bpo This shows up on the terminal window that reflects your update progress. Each time it occurs, a lo-o-o-ong wait ensues, after which the update finally seems to complete. It runs normally otherwise. If I run Software Updater again, it just says that software is up to date - no error. This hasn't actuall...

Hi,My laptop was heating up a bit too much (temperature above 90’s in normal load, and sometimes shutting down after hitting 100C), so I finally decided to open up my Dell XPS 15 (L502X) and replace the thermal paste. I have few questions:When I opened it up, apart from the thermal paste on the cpu (i7-2630QM) and gpu (Nvidia GT-540 2gb), there were several white pads, and one grey pad. The grey pad was above the motherboard HM67 chip. This is the first time I ever saw a heat sink with thermal pad needed to cool down the motherboard. Or am I missing something? And what are all these small white pads? They seem to be covering different chips on the motherboard. Does anyone know the width of t...

Hi, I installed 14.04 back around October 2015 on my mid-2009 iMac and noticed fans were pretty loud. At the time, I found some tips online about quieting them; they'd always run loud during boot, but quickly quiet down.I wiped the Ubuntu install the other day and tried 16.04. Initially the fans were quiet, but after a bit of time the fans became louder and louder. I've tried the macfanctld, which is what I think I did before, but no change.I've installed Psensor and noticed that the CPU and ODD fans are stable, but the HDD fans slowly increases at a perfectly steady rate over time. I thought perhaps temps were increasing gradually, leading to this increase in fan speed, but in actuality all...

I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my Skylake CPU (i7-6700k). It mostly works, except for a few things: I can't get any settings in the Control Center to work (Keyboard Shortcuts, Displays, etc). I also can't launch a gnome-terminal: there's no entry for it on the right-click menu. Without a Gnome-Terminal, I can't do anything (I need this for a development workstation). There are probably more problems, but I haven't uncovered them since I can't use this installation for anything. Here is one of the errors I received: Code: unity-control-center crashed with SIGABRT in g_assertion_message() Has anyone successfully installed Ubuntu 14.04 on a Skylake CPU?NOTE: I have installed Ubuntu 16.04 and it ...

HiI'm writing some rsync scripts to automate backup. Now I could simply use cron to run the jobs on schedule, but my conce is that even with the low-latency keal, rsync might chew up a lot of CPU cycles and cause glitches if recording when a backup starts. So I'm interested to know if the low-latency keel would guard against this, always prioritising audio or if i need to run nice against the cron job, for example:0 6 * * * /usr/bin/nice -n 19 /root/scripts/backup.sh > /dev/null 2>&1If not that, I could use batch to run the backup script whenever it detects system resource using has been low for sometime, indicating that no one is using the computer to record anything.Any advice woul...

My System: nVidia GeForce GTX 960 - PCIe/SSE2; in a Xubuntu 16.04 OS; Linux 4.4.0-28; AMD FX 8350 (8-core); 16 GB ram; ASUS M5A97 R2.0 m/b, nVidia proprietary driver 367.27.Previously under WinXP, Win10 and linux distro's under other cards and driver versions nvclock has worked (--fanspeed 100 (--force)) but under my current upgrade I can't get it to work.I upgraded OS's and Cards and a lot else at same time so can't quite isolate the problem. When I issue command: Code: sudo nvclock --fanspeed 100 --force I get: Code: Error: Your card doesn't support fanspeed adjustments! Also nvclock_gtk (latest package) doesn't add additional functionality as it just "crashes".Is this a case of hardwa...

I was ruing Ubuntu 14 with zero issues. After the upgrade my CPU periodically hits 100% when watching videos or doing graphical things. Netflix, local videos, graphical HTML5 programming, etc. Oddly, when I open the system monitor the CPU drops making it difficult to diagnose the problem. I usually see Chrome using ~14% CPU and everything else at 0%. The local video player uses ~4% CPU, same situation. If I pause the video for a while the CPU drops back to normal.System details:Ubuntu 16.04 LTSMemory: 7.7 GiBProcessor: Intel® Core™ i7-3520M CPU @ 2.90GHz × 4Graphics: Gallium 0.4 on AMD TURKS (DRM 2.43.0, LLVM 3.8.0) (Different from when I was using Ubuntu 14 I think?)OS Type: 64-bitDisk: 483...
