I'm often ruing a simultaneous VNC window alongside a regular native X session. From time to time, and with no rhyme or reason that I can detect, my X window session hangs, producing a black screen. The keyboard isn't frozen (I can see the caps-lock go on), but hitting Alt-F4 or Cntl-Alt-F4 doesn't bring me to a terminal.I'm talking about weeks or months...it's not common! The odd thing is that my VNC session still is fine, and I can access everything fine. But to get back to a working X session, I've had to always close everything out and hard power down the computer. Then reboot. Is there a way to just type something via the command line that will keep the VNC session going and just refresh ...

So I consider myself if not an uber computer geek at least a "power user", and tried to keep my dual boot setup of Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04 for as long as I could. I need Windows currently because of some Windows-only software I need for my classes (hopefully won't need these ever again after I graduate). I was really fed up with Windows 10 (don't like all the telemetry crap, don't use the Windows app store, Cortana, forced updates, confusing settings options, interface in general). My last straw was the other night I had some school documents open and unsaved, and Windows decided to just restart on its own to apply some updates. So I backed everything up, completely wiped Windows 10, did ...

Hello there, I work in a lab with 13 PCs, 12 of them ruing Lubuntu and the last one ruing Ubuntu. Recently I dicided to update these systems so I did update 2 of them (the Ubuntu and one of the Lubuntu, I've used apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade). Since then the Lubuntu and the Ubuntu that I have updated are freezing randomly (the PC freezes and I have to restart it using the power button of the case), I can't find any particular reason that would lead these PCs to freeze, they have 4GBs of RAM (Lubuntu) and 8GBs of RAM (Ubuntu) and run all the time with more than 2,5GB free (the Lubuntu run most of times with over than 80% of CPU utilization, though). These two PCs with problems run ...

I dual boot Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with Windows 10. The installation of 16.04 seemed to go really well, and I've gotten everything set up the way I like, but I'm having a couple of weird bugs that are really aoying. Basically most times I try to login, it either freezes on the login screen before I can start typing, or after I enter my password and hit enter, it will just show the desktop background and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS watermark. I can move the mouse pointer around, but that's it! I have to do a hard shutdown, then start it back up. Then sometimes it will work, but usually not. Waking it from sleep on subsequent startups, it freezes at some point. This is all on a fresh installation that runs wit...

I am trying to add a network printer that is coected to a Windows 7 machine, to Ubuntu 14.04. My linux box is up-to-date. I can coect to the windows machine to get files and what not through SMB. The "add printer" wizard found the printer coected to the windows computer. Clicking the "verify" button, I get "the printer is accessible." With all that, I'm pretty certain that the computers can see one another. Printer sharing is definitely on on the windows machine as another windows computer can coect to the printer. Upon clicking "Forward" to add the printer to Ubuntu, the following error was shown in the terminal Code: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/share/system-config-pri...

I was browsing the Inteet in chrome when my system froze, completely unresponsive. I waited an hour and checked back and it was still frozen, so I had to just power down by holding the power button. Ever since, my WiFi is gone. When I click on the little WiFi icon in the system bar up top, the "Enable Wifi" option is gone, and obviously no WiFi names are present. A proper restart does nothing, and I have no way to get a wired coection established.Edit: Code: rfkill list all outputs nothing. Code: dmesg | grep iwl outputs nothing. Code: lsmod | grep iwl outputs nothing. Code: lspci outputs Code: 3a:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Device 9d21 (rev 21) . And Code: su...

Hi AllCouple weeks ago I had a half of my disc free, but I found today that there is no space(see the system info below). I did not save/create any big files, so it is not clear where the space disappeared. My disc is 450G, Home directory is 190G, Root in 252G. However, I do not understand why root is so big. There are no any big folders in it. Except Home, all other folders together are not more than 10G. So, where these 240G are? See two attached images (baobab's result and folders sizes).Could you please advise what happened and how to free space. I am not very advanced linux user (just use it to run my software), please send me simple instructions.Thakyou!!!Cheers.plasmashell 5.6.90Qt: 5....

The creation of a VirtualBox Ubuntu image worked perfectly yesterday moing (July 16 2016). In the afteoon I repeated the process but the installation procedure stopped when trying to install the nic-firmware package: it simply stops at 26% of the installation process suggesting to change mirror. I've tried several mirrors, with no success. The problem persists today (July 17).To reproduce the problem, download the 32bit 16.04 "minimal" installation iso, and proceed with the creation of the VirtualBox machine (i.e., create the empty vm, add a virtual disk, set the mini.iso as installation CD, run the installation). After setting locales and hostname, the installation starts downloading the pa...

Recently when doing data analysis, I started having issues with Ubuntu completely freezing: screen stops changing, mouse and keyboard do not respond, and hard drive light does not flash. I have tried waiting up to an hour for the system to unfreeze, but it doesn't and requires a manual reboot.Looking into this issue, I have been able to reproduce the freezing by filling up the main memory and making the system use swap. For example, in R (with either the terminal or RStudio) I can use the following code to consistently freeze the system: Code: x <- replicate(1000000, 1:1000) My computer has 8GB of RAM and 8GB swap. I ran this code while observing system monitor, and the system froze wh...

Ever since upgrading from Ubuntu 15.10 to 16.04, I have experienced a lot freezes. These are freezes I could not recover from with ctrl-alt-F1; I had to hard reboot. The freezes occur almost daily, typically 1-3 times per day. My computer is a 2012 iMac i5 with 8 gb RAM and a Nvidia GeForce GT 640M (GK107M); run with a second monitor (Dell) plugged into my thunderbolt/minidisplay port. I use the Nvidia (361.42) driver on my system. The crashes seem to occur with different programs ruing, although I have recently noted that they often occur when I'm ruing LibreOffice Write in combination with something else. Two of the attached logs (kelog and syslog from two crashes today) make reference to L...
