I installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 about a week ago on a partition from my Windows 10 OS. Since then, I have been able to successfully use Grub to choose either windows or Ubuntu to boot. Just now, however, I restarted and the Grub menu didn't appear. The bios menu also did not appear. It then booted straight into Ubuntu. This happened after I tried to hard restart with the power button and the prompt appeared suggesting that I save files first. My files were all saved, but I exited out and saved them all anyways, and then shut down just from the actual software option. Settings seem to have changed as well. For example, my desktop is now stuck at 1024x768, while before I was at 1920x1080. The only ...

I was ruing Ubuntu 14.04 gnome flashback (metacity) before letting the update manager upgrade to 16.04. Ubuntu now only boots to command line. After logging in, the following error appears:-bash: caot create temp file for here-document: Read-only file systemIt looks like the operating system partition got switched to read only at some point but I don't know what to do to fix that or if it's even related. I can live boot from a flashdrive without issue. I would prefer to not have to perform a clean install to fix.Thank you all in advance. Let's block ads! بخوانید...

Hi! I use Ubuntu 16.04 (Unity) on my Dell Inspiron-20-Model-3043 (touch screen). My problem is that the lock screen (ctrl + alt + L) changed to the old style like the one in Ubuntu 10.10, and I don't know why exactly, I don't remember have done anything in particular.maybe it changed after the installation of Unity 8 mir but I didn't notice it until 3 days later so I'm not sure. Something curious is that the login screen works perfectlyThese are the commands I tried until now:sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdmsudo service lightdm restartsudo lightdmBut nothing works, and actually I'm not sure if LightDM controls also the lock screen or only the login screen Let's block ads! بخوانید...

So, let me preface this by stating that I have looked around various forums, including this one, and have not found a viable solution to my issue. The issue is this: I have Ubuntu 16.04 installed on my laptop and where I work has a Xerox Workcentre 7855 with accounting enabled. While I thought I could add whatever drivers and then modify the ppd file, I continually received error codes on whatever the output was.I decided then to try to the Xerox drivers listed on their site. Easy to install. Discovered my device, set up the necessary information via their print manager (sudo xerxprtmgr), but still nothing.Has anyone else had experience with setting up one of these Workcentres successfully us...

Hi!First off, let me say that I've searched in the forums (and the inteet) for this issue and had no luck solving it. Also, I have tried some other distros besides the one I have on the machine right now (Xubuntu 16.04) and it's all the same. The issue itself is that after I install the distro, or run the "try without installing" option, wifi stops working. The FN+F3 combination does not work, and it shows "Device not ready" when I click the coectitons icon. Now, I tried some things (just one that I can remember actually, rfkill) and got this:Wireless is not soft/hard blocked.I can hard block it/unblock it using FN+F3, but the led light never tus on, and it never gives an option to coect, it j...

As the title says my etheet keeps discoecting roughly 5 mins after plugging in the etheet cable. If I plug it out and back in again it works perfectly for another 5 mins. I have a USB to LAN coection when I use that I have no coections whatsoever, it only happens when I plug the etheet cable into the on board etheet port on my laptop. The coection isn't loose and the wire isn't damaged in any way. Any ideas what's causing this? I read somewhere TLP was causing LAN issues and so I uninstalled TLP yet the issue is still their. grateful for any help received on the matter. Here is the output of lspci: Code: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor DRAM Controller (rev 09) ...

Hi,after the update to ubuntu 16.04, my laptop (Samsung NP305E5A) boots to a black screen. The boot process continues since it is obviously reading from the hard drive and also playing the drums sound for the login-window after a while. However, the screen remains black from right after the grub-screen is gone and stays like that. Ctrl+Alt+F2 also does not take me to a usable command line. I found no way for the screen to show anything. However, I did find something one might call a workaround. If I kill the booted laptop by pressing the power button for several seconds and then try the boot process again, ubuntu works absolutely fine with one notable exeption: grub gives me 30 seconds to cho...
