Almost all security is a false sense of security. Not even the Pentagon can keep everyone out of their business.I know of no arrangement where a logged-in user who opens malware (inadvertently or not) is protected whether the home directory is encrypted or not. If the malware is ruing under the logged-in user's account, then the data is effectively not encrypted, because the encryption layer is transparent after the key is enabled. This is true for any operating system.Let's block ads! بخوانید...

Hello all! I am new to this and am hoping to get some help if possible. I have downloaded the 32 bit version of Ubuntu 15.04 and have installed it on my Dell PowerEdge 2650. The system is set up with 4 hard drives, one as the boot drive and the other 4 as RAID. The install seems to go perfectly, but once the system requires reboot, the screen always goes blank and my monitor says "Input Not Supported". The graphics is ruing from the on board controller.I have tried to hold the Left Shift Key, Right Shift Key, ESC, Arrow Down, CTRL+Alt+F1 and still caot access the GRUB screen I keep reading about. I can see the words "Starting GRUB" or something like that right before the screen goes blank. I...

I have a headless home server (Ubuntu 16.04.1) which I monitor from my desktop with gkrellm. Occasionally, I notice that the CPU utilisation on the server spikes for between 10 and 50 seconds, but by the time I've logged in and started htop, utilisation has dropped again to normal, so I have installed gkrelltopd on the server, and gkrelltop on the client.I start the client with gkrellm -s <server.fq.dn>I have the line "plugin-enable gkrelltopd" in my server config /etc/gkrellmd.confWhen I enable the gkrelltop plugin in the client, I momentarily see server processes (openvpn, logitech media server) in the krell, but then gkrellm crashes with the following message: Code: gkrellm segmen...

I've looked around a little on this subject and it seems there are many options. I guess I am looking for some help in narrowing down a path to take so I can remote into my Ubuntu box from my Windows box.One person told me to get PuTTY and that was all they said. I think I've seen PuTTY uses SSH.Will PuTTY allow me to remote into my Ubuntu machine the same way Windows remote desktop lets you remote into other Windows machines?Or is PuTTY only command line? How does PuTTY work and what can I do with it?Then I saw an article that suggested Remmina.Remmina seemed like it might be more like Windows built in remote desktop.Does anyone have experience with Remmina? Thanks! I recently purchased an ASUS USB-N13 Wi-fi adapter for my desktop ruing Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty 64x. I installed the driver using the instructions given in this post http://askubuntu.com/questions/16862...reless-adapter downloading the correct Linux driver from Realtek and also installed the fixes suggested in this post http://askubuntu.com/questions/45675...h-ubuntu-14-04.When plugged in, my network is recognised,http://www.nodular-prurigo.org.uk/images/network1.jpegbut I caot coect any program (Firefox, Chrome, Filezilla etc.) to the inteet. Firefox just gives me this. I have then to use a wired coection which is what I want to get rid of.http://www.nodular-prurigo.org.uk/images/network2.jpegl...

Alright, so they're ALL the wrong forum for this, but I'm hoping y'all can give me some help.I wrote some programs to do some semi-hacky things against some proprietary hardware under 14.04 by ruing as root and mmap'ing the resource0 file under /sys/devices/... . Ugly, but it worked, and it saved having to actually write a keel driver when all I wanted to do was read a couple sporadic registers.strace verifies that under 14.04 I call Code: open("resource0", O_RDONLY) = 3 fstat(3, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0600, st_size=16384, ...}) = 0 mmap(NULL, 16384, PROT_READ, MAP_SHARED, 3, 0) = 0x7fa78bce5000 On 16.04, though Code: open("resource0", O_RDONLY) = 3 fstat(3, {st_mode=S_...

You may have "disabled remote access" -- except for whatever back doors an intruder has opened. Take it off the web yesterday. It is my humble opinion that the only recourse when your machine has been compromised (assuming your description is accurate, it surely has) is euthanasia, followed by putting the dead carcass on a pyre. Nuke it hard and start over. That is the only option I would consider. You simply caot trust that you can find every evil thing in every coer and remove it.I'm sure you have been keeping regular backups of your important data, have you not?Do you have a roommate, by chance? So, there is some really "weired" problem with ubuntu machines. Actually I'd rather blame our, (and with this I am prone to blame myself, as well), ignorance about IP networking.Slightly explained situation :In the moment, I am having situation like this one :- there are two pc's that I am currently observing in this post, (pc1 and pc2)- in addition to it there are some android devices that should be able to browse any of those two- all those are coected to the same wlan router-repeater------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------the tricky part:a pc2 is coected to this router via usb cable, but Ubuntu is treating this as standar...

I was fiddling around in my BIOS to try and install Ubuntu 16.04 and finally managed it but now I can't get into my BIOS.The motherboard is as it says in the post title, I have tried a full power cycle but still have no luck, I have also tried pressing the appropriate keys over and over at boot up (which worked pre-16.04 install), the options don't appear on the screen at boot up.Do I need to re-flash my BIOS? if so, how? Many Thanks.
