How can I get Ubuntu 16.04 to use my external monitor's native resolution?

My exteal monitor is an HDMI LCD screen with 2560x1440 resolution. My laptop is the "MSI GT72 2QE/Dragon Edition" listed on page two of https://www.msi.com/pic/faq/10015790...0001661_en.pdf, which is a document specifying the maximum exteal monitor resolutions for my system. My laptop screen is a 1080p LCD screen. I'm using the exteal monitor in a dual monitor set-up no problem, except that the exteal monitor is ruing at 1920x1080. It's doesn't look awful, but I really wanted to use its native resolution quality. When I go to Displays in System Settings, 1080p is the highest resolution option available for my monitor. The exteal monitor is again a 2560x1440 Dell 27" LCD monitor. What can I do...

[kubuntu] nVidia prime - can't run external monitor on Asus Zenbook

Hi,I bought a new ASUS Zenbook UX501VW with Intel card + Nvidia Geforce 960M. First what I did after installation was set grub option to nouveau.modeset=0 because fans were really loud. I guess that this tu off my nvidia card. Then plugged exteal monitor via HDMI. Everything worked perfect, could do whatever want in KDE display settings, both screens, only one etc. So I'm pretty sure that HDMI port is coected to the Intel card. Then installed latest nvidia drivers (nvidia-367), nvidia-prime and nvidia-settings. Changed grub options (recommended for optimus) to: Code: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pcie_aspm=force drm.vblankoffdelay=1 i915.semaphores=1" Here are my experiences with e...

[ubuntu] External (USB) soundcard stops working after fresh installation and restart

Welcome. Your install is fine. It has nothing to do with your issue so install, if it works fine stay with it so we can try and troubleshoot what's happening. There may be a LOT of stuff in Ubuntu Studio that you will never use, so try that and Ubuntu in a live session to see which you like best before installing. You can install anything from Ubuntu Studio in Ubuntu later if you like.Ubuntu Studio uses the xfce4 desktop environment. Ubuntu uses Unity. If you'd rather use the xfce4 desktop, install Xubuntu (more lightweight) and same applies. You can install what you like from Ubuntu Studio later. Is it a self-powered exteal card? This is a matter of tweaking the OS rather than reinstalling t...

[ubuntu] Rhythmbox hangs on attempt to mount external storage

Hello,I have been having trouble with rhythmbox (and any other music player I have installed: clementine, gnome music, etc.) in that it hangs on startup. This happens when I have coected to exteal server storage, google drive or an nfs file share I setup at home, that is not accessible to rhythmbox (google drive won't allow access, nfs is only available in home network). The issue goes away after a reboot because these file systems are not automounted. I have tried disabling rhythmbox plugins and searching for ways to stop if from searching for removable media to no avail.Ruing rhythmbox --debug gives this output:(rhythmbox:8148): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Unable to grab media player keys: GDBus...

Ubuntu Studio + External Display turns off and can't get it back!

Ubuntu Studio is awesome. Especially since I'm a creative human myself.I installed the 64-bit 16.04 version on my laptop( NEO Basic B5700N ).Processor: Intel Core i7-2630QMGraphics: Intel HD GraphicsRAM: 2GBLCD's broken so I have to attach an exteal monitor to use it.Everything's working fine, except every couple of minutes the exteal monitor tus off and I can't get it back by moving the mouse(assuming it just tus off display when on standby), even with ruing programs or while using the laptop, It still tus off the dispaly. Everything's ruing except the display. I can only get the display back when entering the Ctrl+Shift+F1 mode(forgot what that part is called).I've tried changing the setti...

Kernel panic caused by external USB optical drive

Xubuntu 14.04, up to date on System76 Bonobo Extreme, about a year and a half old. Xubuntu has always been rock solid.A couple months ago I bought a USB 3.0 exteal DVD drive from Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/hq2wctd. The drive generally works fine, but occasionally I try to play a DVD that is not in perfect shape, and the drive ends up endlessly seeking, even long after I have killed the software that was accessing the drive (e.g., VLC). I am unable to eject the media, so the only solution is to discoect the drive. Sometimes this works, but other times the computer locks up tight and I get flashing lights, e.g., a keel panic.I have other USB 3.0 drives, including a 4TB exteal drive, and they n...

[SOLVED] Installing Ubuntu onto External HDD and booting onto Razer Stealth

Are you wanting to try to convert existing install to UEFI, or are willing to start from scratch.Drive will need to be gpt partitioned. That erased drive, but gdisk or sgdisk can convert a drive. Either way really good backups are required.Ubuntu's grub does not make it easy to install to a second drive. I have several installs on second inteal drives and exteal flash drives. You have to partition in advance to be sure to have ESP on second drive. I typically include a bios_grub also just in case later I want to experiment with BIOS boot. I then add a 25GB / and use rest of flash drive as data partition. But even if during Something Else you tell grub to install to sdb. And grub will say insta...

[all variants] Encryption of an external hard drive used also with Windows or Max OS

Hi.My search in the forums on this topic has retued nothing so I start this thread.I have an exteal USB hard drive which I use with my laptops (ruing Ubuntu or Linux Mint) but also with other computers ruing Windows. I might have in the future to use it with Macs.It is currently NTFS formatted although reformatting it would not be an issue.I wish to protect its content by encrypting it. A few years ago I would simply have used TrueCrypt but since it is not supported any longer, I am wondering if I'd better not search for another solution.Creating a LUKS partition would not not work with Windows OS. Similarly using BitLocker would not work with Linux.Any idea ? Let's block ads! بخوانید...

External Hard Drive with Grub, Ubuntu and Live Ubuntu

Hey folks,I have an exteal hard drive, wanted to create something like a "ubuntu live usb"-partition. I found some solutions in the web, but i actually want to access "ubuntu live" via a grub entry, since i also want to install a working ubuntu version on that hard disk (and to be ambitious, i wanted to install also a win 7 recovery option, but this is not that important).I have a partition table with MBR and the following partitions:sdb1 420 GB NTFS, primarysdb2 5 GB Ext4, primary bootsdb3 25 GB NTFS, primarysdb4 50 GB Ext4, primaryI tried to do it with the "Startup Disk Creator", but he does not recognize the partitions (and i put the "boot"-flag to sdb2 with GParted). So my first question ...

Installing multiple OS' to an external HDD

Older BIOS or newer UEFI system?I have multiple installs of Ubuntu on two drives. My older BIOS system had so many old Ubuntu installs, many obsolete as I kept adding 25GB for a new / (root) partition for testing something. I had to tu off os-prober so it would not find the old installs and clog up the grub menu.I prefer smaller system partitions and large data partition. Last system installed with BIOS will be the grub in MBR that controls booting, so system you expect to use the most should be last to install.Use gparted to create all partitions in advance, but keep track. Installer does not show labels and I once installed to a new large data partition instead of my plaed / partition.Lots...

External USB HDDs used for RAID1 keep changing /dev identifiers.

Greetings.I'm trying to use a Mediasonic Probox HF2-SU3S2 drive enclosure with Linux software RAID via mdadm. I have installed 4 drives in the enclosure, with two of the drives (2 TB each) I'm trying to configure as RAID1. The enclosure is coected to my system via USB 3.0. Initially I can see the two drives as /dev/sdb and /dev/sdd. When I do the command to create the RAID the enclosure appears to reset (all the panel lights start flashing, and when the enclosure comes back online the drive designations have changed. Here's a look at what I'm doing:tom@topcat:~$ lsblkNAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINTsda 8:0 0 698.7G 0 disk├─sda1 8:1 0 694.9G 0 part /├─sda2 8:2 0 1K 0 part└─sda5 8:5 0 3....

booting a UEFI PC off an external/cloned *Trusty/14.04* install for a BIOS-based PC

Hi,My wife's venerable HP G62 laptop just died (no more display, not even over the VGA port) at the worst possible time, so we're looking at replacing it ASAP. One potential candidate is the ASUS P2 520LA-XO0456T , and I'd like to know what the odds are that I could boot it into the HP's Linux install. That's a Kubuntu 14.04, fully up to date with a home-built, mainstream 3.14.59 keel and a few PPAs to get newer Qt and KDE4 versions. The Asus is UEFI-based as I guess most newer hardware will be, while I only have Linux installations with GRUB bootloaders for BIOS. That includes the HP's inteal disk which apparently is fine (and contains the single, btrfs Linux partition).grub2 : 2.02~beta2-9u...

[lubuntu] grub2 setup errors on external drive; can boot manually

Lubuntu (I actually installed 16.04 Beta1 rather than 15.10 like I usually would, just to get at keel 4.4) did install correctly to this drive during the install process, but because grub2 and UEFI and exteal USB hard drives are such a rat's nest, I can't get it to set up grub2 correctly.I've managed to get as far as the boot entry taking me to the grub2 command line, and from there, I can point it at the correct linux keel and initrd images and manually boot. From that point on, everything's fine. But I'm at a loss for how to actually get grub installed correctly so I don't have to keep doing that every time. Some stats:The PC itself is a Quantum Byte (32-bit Windows 10, Atom Z3735F, 2GB RAM...
