[ubuntu] Suspend works from menu, but not when lid closed

I have installed Ubuntu 16.04 (Unity 7) on my Intel laptop and most everything works, but the computer runs a little hot.

I set my power controls to Suspend when the lid is closed (whether or not it is plugged in), but it never does. I find the fan ruing and the system ruing warm.

I can get Suspend working when I use the menu (cog in the right of the top panel).

Anybody know how I can get it to Suspend when I close the lid?

I'm not sure what information would be helpful so if you let me know I'll run the command and post the output.
