Using Wake On Lan with Ubuntu 16.04 and MacBook 2007

Hi,

I want to use my old MacBook from 2007 as a Plex media server. As Plex only supports Mac Os Mountain Lion or newer and my MacBook only supports Mac Os up to Lion I've installed the most recent Ubuntu release. Everything works fine except WOL. The MacBook should support this function but the network adapter seems to shut off when entering suspend mode (also pm-hibeate). I tried several things (enabling WOL magic packet with ethtool, acpitool) but can't get it to work.

As most guides refer to PCs and suggest to check BIOS settings I thought there may be something I'm missing which is specific to the MacBook.

Does anyone have a suggestion how to solve this and keep the network adapter on when entering suspend mode?
