[xubuntu] Old laptop goes to sleep when booting and shutdown

I put Xubuntu 16.04 on a old Presario 2200 with a Celeron or Pentium M. When booting up, the laptop will go into standby mode a few times, and when shutting down it will go into standby and never actually shut down. My current solution is to disable ACPI through Grub, but now the laptop just gets stuck when shutting down, and there's no standby mode.

Anyone have any idea how I can fix this? I'd even downgrade the laptop to an older Ubuntu if I knew it would fix this. Also this laptop has no PAE, so I have to force it to install Xubuntu.
