So after reading around i found that if this is tried from a live usb there is a lot less issues encountered. so setup a 16.04 liveusb it no mounts properly and

Code:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo ecryptfs-setup-private
Enter your login passphrase {ubuntu}:
also thanks runrickus i had an old profile associated with a dead email account that had enough posts to allow me to start my own thread, but it was culled due to inactivity which i completely understand. and i will just update this post as i work through on my own and a more complete description until someone replies just to avoid double posting

The hdd with issue has 12.04 and i can log into it, however the home folder will not open and the distro isnt recognizing usb devices. room mates cat interrupted my update when i was afk and that was when the issue started. trying to finish or redo the update does nothing and im afraid to make the issue worse, so i think this is the best way to rescue my data off of the hdd.

originally tried to acess through my normal disto/hdd but because of multiple home folders ecrypt wasnt mounting the correct folder. found that this could be solved by trying to mount from a live usb. created a 6.04 usb and am now trying to access it from there.

now when i run ecrypt i get the output listed above. however the login passphrase isnt the same as the user login for that distro. so how can i recover that passphrase for that folder.
thanks for your help in advance
