[xubuntu] 16.10 problems with NVIDIA 650m

So far setting up yakkety on my 2011 15" macbook pro has been easier than it was with 16.04 with one minor caveat. Xubuntu already recognizes both my integrated intel and discrete nvidia cards, but so far only uses the Intel card(xorg proprietary driver). I am trying to set up switching between both cards but when i install the nvidia current, i believe its 367, the screen doesn't display after reboot (on with nothing to display). I have also tried the other drivers listed in "additional drivers" with no luck. I am aware that there were previous workarounds that involved editing grub, but I don't think I fall into that category since xubuntu is already recognizing both cards. Also I had installed nvidia-prime installed and was able to run the switch GPU command but, from what I could tell, a switch never actually took place. Has anyone run into this problem?
