Settings are a major problem suddeny

Hi, a few days ago after an update some things went weird, after some sleuthing and not going anywhere, i decided to bite the bullet and just reinstall 16.04, as what can go wrong eh?
So, now i am stuck with a system that has some very strange problems, Chromium for instance crashes when i go to settings by choosing preferences in the edit menu.
Fonts settings are not acted on, and not remembered, my theme is a mess, restricted extras refuses to install (with a pop up about MS Corefonts, that just will not install and as such keeps pestering me).
Screensaver is active, and does not accept settings at all, never or 1hr just do nothing, screens blacks out after 5 minutes, driving me bonkers when i watch a movie.
Full reset on Unity, no luck, even purge and reinstall does nothing

Anyone with a tip how to fix this mess?
