Grey floating boxes

Hello, I get grey floating (top of everything) boxes on my laptop, the more it's on the more of them come. till I can't handle it any more an have to do a reboot. Tried googling but could not find anything.

My laptop is an X1 Carbon (Lenovo), it uses Intel integrated graphics and I'm ruing the microcode driver provided by canonical for it (tried without it too). The boxes are always there when they appear except on the lock screen where they are absent. They very much distrupt my workflow and pay does not seem to care about what I do, they are still stationary at the same place. a restart of the computer makes them go away for an hour or so.
