Lubuntu, Xubuntu and Ubuntu MATE, all lightweight, install just the same way. To add a different desktop without reinstalling from scratch:

sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop

sudo apt-get install mate-desktop

You can select the desktop from the login screen (otherwise known as the display manager).

I prefer MATE myself, but all three are lightweight and are suitable for a ten year old computer.
