[ubuntu] Screen not drawn correctly after resume from standby

On Ubuntu 16.04 'Xenial', every so often after resuming from standby the screen is not drawn correctly:

Almost all characters are not drawn. This affects all applications (except VirtualBox machines).

After logging out and back in again, the screen is drawn correctly again.

I have Intel built-in graphics. It's a clean Ubuntu 16.04 installation, no upgrade.

Any ideas?
