Ubuntu Touch OTA-11 released

After a slight delay, Lukasz 'sil2100' Zemczak aounces the release of Ubuntu Touch OTA-11. He links to the release notes which include changes, image numbers, issues and commitlogs. He concludes: "Once again big thanks to everyone participating in this release! It was another huge one with many devices to consider, making it a more challenging every time. Let's just keep on rolling!

Kubuntu: Plasma 5.6.4 available in 16.04 Backports

The Kubuntu team aounces the availability of Plasma 5.6.4 in the backports PA. Plasma 5.6 was released in March with many feature refinements and new modules to complete the desktop experience. Here you can find instructions on how to obtain the latest release.

Ubuntu App Developer Blog: Can I haz MainView in a Window?

Zoltan Balogh for the App Developer blog writes that "apps are currently advised to use a MainView as the root item, which can have a width and a height used as the window dimensions in a windowed environment - on phones and tablets by default all apps are always full screen." He goes on to say that as soon as users resize the window, some apps may no longer look great. QtQuick.Window solves this by providing minimum/maximum/Width/Height properties. This article describes how to utilize this function.

Sebastian Kugler: Multiscreen in Plasma 5.7 and beyond

Sebastian Kugler provides information about the status in Multiscreen in Plasma 5.7. He shares that even though there are problems with restoring previously set up configurations, and around the primary display mechanism, they are currently working on fixes. As they put it, it's the stuff nightmares are made of. "Multiscreen support requires many different components to play in tune with each other, and they're usually divided into separate processes communicating via different chaels with each other." A fix is in the works.

Zygmunt Krynicki: Bug #1587445 is no more; Thank you Thibran!

Zygmunt Krynicki thanks Thibran for a bug fix, writing "This bug was opened less than 24 hours ago. Thibran forked the code, followed our hacking instructions, proposed the fix on github, talked to us on IRC (#snappy) and got his contribution merged."

Daniel Holbach aounces the release of Snappy Playpen, a software utility that enables the sharing of apps through the Ubuntu store. Interested developers are encouraged to visit the project's page on GitHub and to contribute in the upcoming "free for all week", which will allow volunteers to figure out exactly how they want to contribute.

Snaps Can Now Integrate With Unity 7 Desktop Features

Joey-Elijah Sneddon, of OMG! Ubuntu!, writes that a number of welcome desktop integration features arriving in the latest 'micro release' of Snappy. "Snapd 2.0.5 enables software packaged in the new format to display indicator applets in the system tray and deliver native system notifications," says Sneddon. He reports that Snapd 2.0.5 will land in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and Ubuntu 16.10. This article also touches on future features such as font sharing.

Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) Switches to a Universal Local DNS Resolver Service

Marius Nestor, of Softpedia, writes "Ubuntu 16.10 is currently in heavy development these days, and it is getting all sorts of new GNU/Linux technologies and improvements." Nestor states that one of the technologies implemented in Ubuntu 16.10 is "a new, universal local DNS resolver service for all Ubuntu Linux flavors, including Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server, and Ubuntu Touch." The article also touches on system230 which is now available in Ubuntu 16.10.

This article, by JC Torres for SlashGear, discusses and summarizes the Ubuntu Touch platform. "The bq Aquaris M10 is a promising start to a new kind of convergent computing but is hampered by decent but mediocre hardware and work-in-progress software," says Torres. "Mobile devices, especially smartphones, are becoming more powerful every year and are practically taking over our computing lives." He concurs that Ubuntu Touch is a convergence device.

Marius Nestor, of Softpedia, writes that Mycroft AI can run on Ubuntu GNOME. Mycroft is a new device technology that can coect to your house, and act like a virtual AI (artificial intelligence). Nestor writes that it is available for desktop Linux. Also included are instructions on how to to try it on your system.

It Will Soon Be Possible to Deliver Many Popular Games as Snaps for Ubuntu 16.04

Marius Nestor, of Softpedia, writes that "Canonical's Zygmunt Krynicki and Michael Vogt have aounced the debut of snapd 2.0.5, the fifth maintenance release in the stable 2.0 series of the Snappy daemon for Ubuntu Linux." snapd 2.0.5 is not a notable release, but it improves the Snap integration for the Unity 7 desktop environment on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) in the way that it adds more support for FreeDesktop, KDE, and D-Bus Menu notifications. He writes that by and large, there are the obvious enhancements that should make the Snappy experience much better.
