Wired coections on Dell PowerEdge R900 delay/drop in and out

I am ruing Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

I have installed Ubuntu on an R900 server (plan to use it as a vhost). Not the first time I've done this, but in this case I seem to be having some networking issues. Namely, coections seem to keep dropping in and out. There seems to be some initial delays in coectivity (especially when coecting to the Inteet) following by good coectivity, then the occasional drop out. There are two sets of NICs on the box: one Broadcom and one Intel and they both seem to exhibit this behavior. Any ideas? I have read that sometimes power management can interfere with this, but there does not seem to be any consistent way of checking this or tuing it off.
