looking for suggestion for setting up a computer club for middle school

I am new to Ubuntu but not new to Linux. I am now 62 years old and am getting close to retirement after 34 years as a software engineer.

I started doing software a long time ago as a machine language programmer (TMS 9900) for a company that did custom testers for the contact manufacturing industry. Then was thrilled with my first symbolic assembler ( Intel 8080 )! Went from there to C, then years latter to C++, even taught OO for a while. What I am doing now if Java development for Aircraft Systems Simulations that run on Linux system. Along the way there was some Fortran, Pascal, Basic, PLM, RLL languages. It has been fun. I actually started in the High Tech industry as an electronics technician and I have a dozen years of doing exrething from design, build, test and debug complex hardware designs. But that was years ago.

So as part of my getting ready for retirement I need to plan ahead. I have some health issues that need to be resolved. One of them, a bad hip, was just resolved. Total hip replacement two weeks ago. In a few months I will get a knee replacement. Then after some convalescence I am plaing to retire early next year, or after the next really bad meeting

Software has been my life for a long time and have no plan to walk away from it. What I think I want to do is to give back. Some of my best times have been when I got to be a mentor for young engineers. So I have spent a long time thinking about what I want to do.

When I retire, my wife and I are going to move back to rural southe Alabama. She has followed me around for the last 30 years and she want to go back home where her family is. So that is what we are going to do.

I think what I want is to reach out to a couple of the local high schools and start up a technology club. Something that is mixture of hardware and software. Focused on the Junior high and above and do things like teaching Java, maybe writing apps for smart phones, maybe some hardware stuff using VoCore one one of the other embedded computer designs.

Anyway this will be in the very rural part of Alabama where 80% of the students are on some form of nutritional support. I have a niece there that is an English teacher and she tells me that in her school they are starting to provide an evening meal in addition to breakfast and lunch because of the level of poverty.

I grew up poor. In High School I joined a chess club and an Electronics club. They changed my life. I want to do the same.

I am looking for ideas on how to put together the appropriate infrastructure to support this club idea.
Things like servers to provide OS and tools, clients for members, things like that.

Most of this has probably already been done. Many of tools I am looking at are open source with free licenses for private use but with fees for other than private. So send me any links that you think might be appropriate.

I have a friend and co-worker that thinks some of this might be supported by grants and such.
