Ok, so this is starting to make more sense now. I think I know *how* it happened, just need to get it fixed. So my laptop has an inteal 16GB SSD. Before this happened, I had flashed a USB stick with a RetroPie image... you guessed it I had inserted a 16GB USB stick. Most likely something happened during that, that screwed up GRUB. It certainly *did* live on SDA1, and all my EFI files are there. SDB in this case I don't care if it has errors, it's not being used.

As far as SDA not being flagged for ESP, it's because I was tinkering around with boot-repair and gparted and I was trying different flags. If memory serves the first time I looked at the partition it had no flags set, and I tried various ones.
