[ubuntu] 16.04 Bluetooth coects but no audio out on earphones

Asus USB-BT211 dongle
Bluetrek ST1 bluetooth stereo headset
Ubuntu 16.04 4.4.0-22-generic x86_64
Computer: Acer Aspire X1700 w/4Gb RAM, 500Gb HD

Using Bluetooth that came installed with Ubuntu 16.04, the headset pairs and coects and shows in bluetooth devices. When trying to play DVD in VLC or a video from the web, the headset shows in the sound settings and is shown with analog stereo for the ST1 headset. In VLC, when I click on Audio and select the ST1 I hear the earphone coect, but there is no audio. The mute is off and the volume is about 85% in VLC. Clicking on Sound and selecting output speakers, everything OK, but when you click back on the ST1, nothing. I tried another Bluetooth headset with same results. Visually everything is working, it appears that A2DP is not. Any suggestions?
