HP 8440p scrambled screen at wakeup event 16.4 LTS

Symptoms
========

When waking up the device, the screen is 'scrambled' and flickering. Forced to reboot the machine: not elegant or desirable, but effective.

Diagnostic questions are appreciated (bonus if they are command line instructions) , as are any actionable suggestions.

Questions
========

1. Is this a known problem? My search did not produce results
2. What diagnostics can be performed to ID root cause of problem? (Video driver?)
