[ubuntu] Asus AC56 wifi adapter not working in 16.04 anymore

Since 16.04 is now LTS, I figured I could post this here instead of the development forum.

So I haven't been on Ubuntu for the last couple of weeks and now my wifi adapter isn't working in 16.04 again. It was workin good for a while, but hasn't started back up.

I unplugged it multiple times, put it in different USB 3.0 slots, did a full update and dist-upgrade just now and even re-ran all of this code:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential git
git clone https://github.com/gnab/rtl8812au.git
cd ~/rtl8812au
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe 8812au

Any suggestions on how to get this to work again?
