[ubuntu] Gnome Wave Cleaner plays wave files at double speed

I'm new to this forum, so I hope this is the right place to post this. I'm ruing release 14.04 on a Dell inspiron mini 10V. My problem is that GWC is playing wav files at twice the normal speed so that singers all sound like the Chipmunks. When launching from the command line, I get the following waing messages:

I don't know if these relate to my problem or not.

Any help or insight is greatly appreciated.
