Installation of Ubuntu 16.04 alongside Windows 8.1

I am trying to install Ubuntu 16.04 on my laptop which already has Windows 8.1. However, I am not able to boot into the installer. I either don't get the installer, or on selecting the options, my system freezes. I have tried the following so far:

1.) Tued on/off Secure Boot
2.) Created a GPT USB disk using Rufus
3.) Tued off Fast Startup in Windows.
4.) Tried setting the nomodeset keel parameter when I get the boot menu.

None of these have seemed to work. Am I missing something?
