[SOLVED] Usb audio devices

Hi there fellow Ubunters
I have a usb headset which used to function perfectly until ... this moing. The headset is not faulty I believe. Methinks it has everything to do with ALSA Mixer. What happens when I plug my usb headset is that it only gives a static sound and the speakers are not muted and go on playing sound.
I have just found a page about UbuntuStudio / usbdevices and I quote:

This is very useful for everyday use, but it becomes difficult for pro-audio use, as ALSA device numbers (hw:X) are not stable across reboots, or even when removed and reinserted. This means that Jack has to be reconfigured after every restart or change.

This does notaugur well of being able to use the headset with ubuntu any longer. If I want to use it again then I'll have to load vista. It is a piece of luck I am on dual boot.

Or is there a "non-arcane" way of using my headset again with ubuntu ?
