Sound stutters intermittently: How to diagnose/report?

I used to have no sound on Ubuntu 14.04. I then installed the latest Alsa driver by following these instructions: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS

This gave me sound, but I have a problem with the sound; it stutters intermittently. About every 5-10 minutes, whatever is playing, be it from an audio file on my computer or a YouTube video, will stutter for about 0.5 seconds. It's as if my computer was experiencing massive lag and then half a second later, the lag clears up, allowing the sound to play normally again. Except there is no massive lag at all; only a few light-resource programs are ruing.

How do I begin diagnosing this problem?
