Ubuntu 15.10 locks peridically

I don't know what it is, doesn't matter what version of Ubuntu I use, every so often my machine would completely lock up, I couldn't move the mouse, couldn't get to the terminal, the only solution was to reset the machine. The lock up can happen at any time.

For this reason I have never been able to use Ubuntu properly and usually end up installing something else usually Ubuntu Mate, Mint. I don't get this problem with any other distribution.

I installed Ubuntu 15.10 a couple of days ago, and up popped this problem again. It happened when I was scrolling down a webpage, and then happened again when searching for applications.

If you could give me any tips on how I could diagnose this problem so I can give Ubuntu another go it would be much appreciated. It's quite ironic that the distribution that really opened up Linux for me, Ubuntu 4.10 yes a long time ago, is the one that doesn't work properly.
