question involves mic settings for skype calls

I have been using skype successfully for a long time now, both with 14.04.5 ubuntu and windows10. But when in Ubuntu, I have to go into system settings, sound, output devices...and choose my mic from a list. After doing this, the person that I call (or whose call I answer) is able to hear my voice. But upon closing system settings, this setting is not saved. Therefore, the next call I make, I must go to sound settings and change to my mic, well, long story short I have leaed to leave system settings active after making this change. I would like system settings to save this change and save me the trouble. Any suggestions?
