I installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 about a week ago on a partition from my Windows 10 OS. Since then, I have been able to successfully use Grub to choose either windows or Ubuntu to boot. Just now, however, I restarted and the Grub menu didn't appear. The bios menu also did not appear. It then booted straight into Ubuntu. This happened after I tried to hard restart with the power button and the prompt appeared suggesting that I save files first. My files were all saved, but I exited out and saved them all anyways, and then shut down just from the actual software option. Settings seem to have changed as well. For example, my desktop is now stuck at 1024x768, while before I was at 1920x1080. The only ...

Hi All,since there are media providers blocking data center IPs am no longer able to enjoy some services. I was a little bit upset, but then this idea hit me:I am still an owner of a VPS which I used as a VPN-Server/Gateway using PPTP. The idea is to set up Raspberry Pi which will be placed in a friends house and act like a gateway. (my friend has unfortunately a dynamic IP and does not agree to use any DynDNS services) I was thinking about creating a virtual adapter which will coect to my VPN-Server with a static IP on this Interface. The VPN Server will route the traffic from other clients through the Raspberry Pi at my friends house.Has anyone tried this yet? Would you recommend another s...

Hello. My friend has Ubuntu, the previous LTS, installed on her Asus EEE PC 1000H laptop. She is considering to upgrade to Xenial Xerus. Are there any guarantees if the upgrade succeeds, and whether it works well enough? The current LTS Ubuntu works on the laptop, it is really slow but works. The laptop has 2 GB RAM, 120 GB Kingston SSD, GPU is probably Intel GMA.Has anybody else experiences on ruing Xenial Xerus on EEE PC 1000H?What are the possible problems one should expect when upgrading and after the upgrade (if it succeeds)? I agree with the recommendation to have separate home partitions for each of the installed systems. (You can also have /home as directories inside the root directories.)If you want to share personal files (documents, music, multimedia files) I suggest that you have a separate data partition. When you have Windows alongside linux, it is a good idea to use the file system NTFS in the data partition to make it available for both linux and Windows. Otherwise you should use a linux file system (for example ext4).(Linux can also read and write the Windows [system] partition, but it is risky, it is better to have a separate data partition.) Hello.Am a Linux novice. Performed an on-line update from 14.04 to 16.04 on my laptop which is an Asus Ultrabook. It has an 1T SSD and is dual-boot with Windows 8.1 via grub. Have done the same upgrade on my Intel i7 desktop without issue. It however DOES NOT have an SSD.During boot, there are errors reported that I caot decipher and, I believe, has to do with Ubuntu recognizing my SSD (sd9?). It is a Corsair SSD. During boot it performs some sort of disk diag that runs for 1m 50s? Sometimes it won't boot at all and I have to do the three-finger-salute (control-alt-delete).Have a copy of my dmsg file and have attached it... (after I looked up where to find it)Again. It's an Asus Ultrabook S5...

Recently, I caught a virus on an old HTPC ruing windows 7. So, I decided to expand my horizons and try Ubuntu 16.04 LTS as I've started to lea some coding recently and thought it could be interesting. So far, it works great for Youtube and most other videos. However, you try to watch Hulu/HBOGo, and it's a no go. It just sits there at a black screen. I tried various solutions, like these:1.) https://www.maketecheasier.com/watch-hbo-now-ubuntu/ - gives a nice write-up and how to in order to get Firefox working using pipeline and a Flash version for windows (I think).2) http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2015/09/h...ubuntu-1404-up - talks about updating HAL and some other digital rights stuff (DRM), v...

Installed Ubuntu last night and have spent the last 10 hours today trying to get my old adapter working, alas I have given up. Does anybody know of a adapter that will just install and work without having to fiddle with anything? This seems to be the closest I have found, but it only mentions 15.10.My last attempt at solving my previous adapter can be found here, if you feel like helping that way.Thanks. Tonight I got a popup on my machines that says: New important security and hardware support update.WARNING: Security updates for your current Hardware Enablement Stack ended on 2016–08–04:* https://wiki.ubuntu.com/1404_HWE_EOL I thought 14.04 was supported for five years, and it looks like this is trying to force me to upgrade to 16.04 or else not get keel security update. I DO NOT wish to upgrade to 16.04 at this time for a couple of reasons, first I have seen too many reports of people having problems after an upgrade, but more important I am ruing an older version of Kodi and I do NOT want to be forced to upgrade that because it has some bugs I don't want to deal with.I really don't under...

I was just given an iPod Classic, 60GB. In looking at posts on these forums, there does not seem to be any posts since 2014 on using an iPod classic. All I want to do is transfer MP3 and WAV files from my PC to the iPod and listen to them. The File Manager in Lubuntu senses (sees) the iPod, but that appears to be the extent of it. So I am not sure how to proceed. There is this link https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PortableDevices/iPod that talks about gtkpod, Amarok, Rhythmbox and Banshee. And this link ( https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Po...Devices/iPhone ) that seems to recommend Banshee for newer iPods. I tried to download gtkpod, Amarok, Rhythmbox and Banshee from the Lubuntu Software ...

I've looked around a little on this subject and it seems there are many options. I guess I am looking for some help in narrowing down a path to take so I can remote into my Ubuntu box from my Windows box.One person told me to get PuTTY and that was all they said. I think I've seen PuTTY uses SSH.Will PuTTY allow me to remote into my Ubuntu machine the same way Windows remote desktop lets you remote into other Windows machines?Or is PuTTY only command line? How does PuTTY work and what can I do with it?Then I saw an article that suggested Remmina.Remmina seemed like it might be more like Windows built in remote desktop.Does anyone have experience with Remmina? Thanks!
