I installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 about a week ago on a partition from my Windows 10 OS. Since then, I have been able to successfully use Grub to choose either windows or Ubuntu to boot. Just now, however, I restarted and the Grub menu didn't appear. The bios menu also did not appear. It then booted straight into Ubuntu. This happened after I tried to hard restart with the power button and the prompt appeared suggesting that I save files first. My files were all saved, but I exited out and saved them all anyways, and then shut down just from the actual software option. Settings seem to have changed as well. For example, my desktop is now stuck at 1024x768, while before I was at 1920x1080. The only ...

I have a 64BIT OpenSuSE server I'm looking to migrate over to Ubuntu.Dell 7500 Workstation with Intel E5 Xeon processor64GB of RAM and 20TB of dataMySQL database to migrate over with it.First off before going any further, I noticed the only architecture for 64bit is AMD 64, so does this mean having a Dell server based on Intel, I'm dead in the water as is? If so I can just go towards SME Server, but I would rather try Ubuntu as it's a bit unique on it's own/to try something different.Or is there something unique about the 32bit version that will allow it to use the full 64GB of RAM? This is a domain controller that will also virtualize multiple other servers and other functions. Basically a ...

Greetings,I recently built my first 16.04 server. It has 2 1TB drives in a RAID 1 for /, Boot, Swap, and Primary Data Storage. The boot partitions on both drives is marked as bootable. It has another RAID 1 of 1TB drives for archive data storage.Discoecting any one drive prevents successful boot and drops to initramfs.Ruing dpkg-reconfigure mdadm does not ask about boot degraded. I have tried suggestions on http://askubuntu.com/questions/78995...ot-in-16-04lts without success.I'm hoping someone can assist with setting up both raids to boot degraded as neither RAID will boot but drops into initramfs. Thanks in advance,LeonAdditional detail in case it matters:/proc/mdstat:Personalities : [raid1] ...

I am at my wits end trying to set up RAID 1 for my OS devices. I feel like I have tried everything but I always get some sort of failure back. Here's what I have done so far that has gotten me the furthest:Both devices:2GB /boot (yes it's big but I really don't care)42GB /12GB swapThat is done on both devices (side note: setting the boot flag never works, it always remains in the off position)Next, I go to configure software RAID and I set RAID 1, 2 disks, 0 spares and choose the partitions accordingly. Once finished, I have my 3 RAID devices, my first one I set to /boot, second is / and third is swap. I get down to the point where it fails to install GRUB on the second disk. I have also tri...

So I have an HP Mini netbook that was previously used as my main laptop. I have since upgraded to a better system, but my need for it retued as my old server, a Sony VAIO laptop, experienced a hard drive failure. It was old anyways so I decided to use the netbook instead. It didn't have a CD drive so I had to put the ISO for Unbuntu Server (32-Bit) on a flash drive. The installation succeeded, but when it came time to restart to boot for the first time, the laptop would get to the HP splash screen but would hang at this screen. Keyboard input didn't help either. Couldn't change boot settings and couldn't enter BIOS. I took it apart and hooked up the HDD to my desktop computer. The drive spun...

Hi there,I just upgraded LTS to 16.04 and noticed that the disk utility does no longer display RAID information. It appears it has been discontinued on purpose. So I'd like to ask if somebody knows an alteative GUI with some basic RAID support. For serious things I use the command line anyway. However, it was nice to have a GUI.Thanks in advance for your replies! Let's block ads! بخوانید...

Hi All,since there are media providers blocking data center IPs am no longer able to enjoy some services. I was a little bit upset, but then this idea hit me:I am still an owner of a VPS which I used as a VPN-Server/Gateway using PPTP. The idea is to set up Raspberry Pi which will be placed in a friends house and act like a gateway. (my friend has unfortunately a dynamic IP and does not agree to use any DynDNS services) I was thinking about creating a virtual adapter which will coect to my VPN-Server with a static IP on this Interface. The VPN Server will route the traffic from other clients through the Raspberry Pi at my friends house.Has anyone tried this yet? Would you recommend another s...

None seem to do what I need. I can access the webcam with Cheese, but I don't think it does motion detection? I agree with the recommendation to have separate home partitions for each of the installed systems. (You can also have /home as directories inside the root directories.)If you want to share personal files (documents, music, multimedia files) I suggest that you have a separate data partition. When you have Windows alongside linux, it is a good idea to use the file system NTFS in the data partition to make it available for both linux and Windows. Otherwise you should use a linux file system (for example ext4).(Linux can also read and write the Windows [system] partition, but it is risky, it is better to have a separate data partition.)
