[lubuntu] Installation of Lubuntu on old Laptop - remove hard drive?

Hi there,I'm trying to intall Lubuntu on an old laptop to use as a NAS / web server / for general messing about.... The laptop is ancient, has 128mb ram and a 800mhz processor. It's ruing Win XP.I have tried various installation methods without success:- Unetbootin install to HDD (same partition as Windows - there is no other option in unetbootin) - The installation competes but no grub bootloader appears and the Laptop just boots into Windows.- USB stick intallation has the following issues: - The laptop does not seem to boot my Lubuntu usb stick (which boots on all other boxes).- I think the BIOS settings are correct, but the laptop keyboard doesn't work, so I can't change the BIOS setting...

[kubuntu] how to dual-boot kubuntu in UEFI mode, with windows 10 and two ssd hard drives?

Hi,I have an HP envy 4 laptop that I have recently upgraded with a 750 GB ssd ( + the additional built-in 32 gb ssd). I have installed windows 10 in the 750 gb drive, in UEFI mode (legacy is completely disabled in the BIOS options), letting windows use 100 GB. The windows installation went fine and it is working ok, and it has created the typical 100mb ESP partition plus a "System" and "C." partitions. Now I am trying to install kubuntu in the remaining space. My goal is to install the / partition in the 32 gb in-built drive, and the rest (home +a 16gb swap) in the spare space of the 750gb ssd.To do so I am partitioning manually the two drives using the installer option. I am making sure that...

[ubuntu] Booting from external hard drive

I installed ubuntu 16.04 on an exteal hard drive. There is nothing else on the drive. I wiped it with the install.I have 4 old computers ruing various versions of linux. On each computer I plugged in the hard drive, adjusted the bios so the 1st thing it would try to boot from was a usb device, and booted up.On one computer it worked fine. This was not the computer I used to install ubuntu to the exteal hard drive. On each of the other 3, there were 3 different error messages, but none of them would boot.On each of the other 3, if I booted from linux on the inteal drive, I could see the exteal hard drive and read and write to it.Is this common? Are there often problems with booting from exteal ...

Removing second hard drive after installtion

Hello.First off, this post is about an linux mint installation.I have two hard drives on my computer, sda and sdb. sda is old and has windows XP and linux mint 17. sdb is brand new and I installed linux mint 18 on it. GRUB is installed on sdb.I wanted to remove the old hard drive after installing LM 18 on the new HD. However, once I remove the old hard drive, there is a significant increase in boot time... it takes about 3 - 4 minutes. While the old drive is plugged in, boot takes less than a minute. Why is unplugging the old hard drive producing longer boot times? there is nothing else wrong with the boot procedure.. no errors are shown.(at one point, in order to fix this issue, I unplugged ...

How to encrypt all internal hard drives and unlock them at startup?

Hello everyone, basically, I would like to encrypt my three inteal hard drives and have them unlock at system start so they are immediately usable, but unreadable from the outside.I am currently in the process of installing Ubuntu 16.04 and saw that the installer offers an option to encrypt the installation drive with LVM. However, this does not seem to include other inteal physical drives. Is there any way to include my two other drives in this encryption system and have them unlocked at the splash screen or user logon as well? I would prefer to do this without installing additional software afterwards, if this is even possible.I would be very glad about any advice on how this can be done. K...

[all variants] intel wireless 3165 problem -- hardware or bad driver?

Hi, I am a complete newbie to Ubuntu and I have a problem with WiFi. This is on a completely new laptop with no Windows or other OS to compare. This new laptop with Ubuntu has weak WiFi coection and is very sensitive -- even a chair between laptop and router causes the coection to be significantly lower even though the distance is about 1.5 meters. My old Toshiba L300 has no such problem. I also use another WiFi that is few meters from my room and there are some walls in the way but my old Toshiba sees is quite well and it's usable. This new laptop on the other hand coects to it but the coection is so low that even Google takes long to load.Is this hardware problem or can it be that I just ha...

[ubuntu] Laptop purchase & hard drive dual booting

Good moing. My husband said he would only buy me a new laptop IF I dont put linux on it and he hates anything outside of Windows first off and he says I will void the warranty if I mess with the partition and I asked the Geek Squad and they said yes that most manufacturers will void the warranty if I do that and I see too many problems in review sections of all laptops. So my question to you all is, if I put Ubuntu Mate in a Virtual Machine, will that be the same as messing with the harddrive, will it run as smoothly as if I had it on its own partition, will my windows be vulnerable to viruses, malware/spyware if I access something on Linux in the Virtual Machine and what type of processor a...
