I tried udisksctl and hdparm commands with no luck. My first idea was to make linux run a script at shutdown to manually tu it off, but it look like I can only spin it down. The only thing I didn't try is to enable the XHCI Hand-off option in my BIOS.My new computer have a ASUS H...
ادامه مطلبI installed ubuntu 16.04 on an exteal hard drive. There is nothing else on the drive. I wiped it with the install.I have 4 old computers ruing various versions of linux. On each computer I plugged in the hard drive, adjusted the bios so the 1st thing it would try to boot from was a usb device, and booted up.On one computer it worked fine. This was not the computer I used to install ubuntu to the exteal hard drive. On each of the other 3, there were 3 different error messages, but none of them would boot.On each of the other 3, if I booted from linux on the inteal drive, I could see the exteal hard drive and read and write to it.Is this common? Are there often problems with booting from exteal ...

I looks like it is divisible by 8 (check my math), which is what is important.Partition does not start on physical sector boundary.First, understand that most partitioning tools have moved to a policy of aligning partitions on 1 MiB (2048-sector) boundaries as a way of improving performance with some types of arrays and some types of new hard disks (those with 4096-byte physical sectors). See article by srs5694:http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/li...-sector-disks/Post on 8-sector boundaries alignment by srs5694http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1685666it's 8-sector (4096-byte) alignmenthttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1768635Note that ful...
ادامه مطلبHi.My search in the forums on this topic has retued nothing so I start this thread.I have an exteal USB hard drive which I use with my laptops (ruing Ubuntu or Linux Mint) but also with other computers ruing Windows. I might have in the future to use it with Macs.It is currently NTFS formatted although reformatting it would not be an issue.I wish to protect its content by encrypting it. A few years ago I would simply have used TrueCrypt but since it is not supported any longer, I am wondering if I'd better not search for another solution.Creating a LUKS partition would not not work with Windows OS. Similarly using BitLocker would not work with Linux.Any idea ? Let's block ads! بخوانید...
ادامه مطلبI'm an ubuntu newbie, trying to install Ubuntu 16.04 onto an exteal hard drive, and I'm ruing the installer off a bootable flash drive. When I reach the stage where I have to create new partitions for the / and swap, i remove all the current partitions from the drive and make space only for the / and swap. When I click continue, I get this error message "The partition /dev/sdb1 assigned to / starts at an offset of 3584 bytes from the minimum alignment for this disk, which may lead to very poor performance. Since you are formatting this partition, you should correct this problem now by realigning the partition, as it will be difficult to change later. To do this, go back to the main partition...

ادامه مطلبHey folks,I have an exteal hard drive, wanted to create something like a "ubuntu live usb"-partition. I found some solutions in the web, but i actually want to access "ubuntu live" via a grub entry, since i also want to install a working ubuntu version on that hard disk (and to be ambitious, i wanted to install also a win 7 recovery option, but this is not that important).I have a partition table with MBR and the following partitions:sdb1 420 GB NTFS, primarysdb2 5 GB Ext4, primary bootsdb3 25 GB NTFS, primarysdb4 50 GB Ext4, primaryI tried to do it with the "Startup Disk Creator", but he does not recognize the partitions (and i put the "boot"-flag to sdb2 with GParted). So my first question ...
ادامه مطلبUbuntu 14.04 LTSI have two exteal hard drives. Both are NTFS and in all aspects exactly the same, except that one is a 100 GB disk and the other one a 2TB disk. On the smaller disk files are deleted directly, while on the larger one it goes to the rubbish bin. Also on the smaller one I can run scripts that I create or store on that disk even though the owner is root (all text files are by default executable), but on the larger one all text files are by default not executable, and I am unable to change it to executable, even though I am the owner of the file. Why the difference and where can I change these preferences? Let's block ads! بخوانید...
