[xubuntu] 15.10 -> 16.04 upgrade failed

I tried automatic upgrade from Ubuntu 15.10 to 16.04, but it failed. sudo dpkg --configure -a tells me that there dependency problems with many packages that it won't repair. What is the next recommended step to try to repair this system?
