I installed Ubuntu 16.04.1 about a week ago on a partition from my Windows 10 OS. Since then, I have been able to successfully use Grub to choose either windows or Ubuntu to boot. Just now, however, I restarted and the Grub menu didn't appear. The bios menu also did not appear. It then booted straight into Ubuntu. This happened after I tried to hard restart with the power button and the prompt appeared suggesting that I save files first. My files were all saved, but I exited out and saved them all anyways, and then shut down just from the actual software option. Settings seem to have changed as well. For example, my desktop is now stuck at 1024x768, while before I was at 1920x1080. The only ...

I am an English speaker who often writes in Japanese to friends, etc. I am finding that my Lubuntu 16.04.1 LTS install has a weird bug that's frustrating the hell out of me: it doesn't seem to remember my switching the input method from the default, "none," to fcixt or ibus. Nearly all the instructions I can find online say "Go to Preferences, Language Support, and choose either ibus or fcixt, logout, then log back in."But when I do that, the same "none" is back, always preselected. Any settings I change require relogging in...which means they vanish.I can see the nice input window sitting there. But it just doesn't DO anything...I hit "cntl-space" and it appears or disappears, but never all...

I have a 64BIT OpenSuSE server I'm looking to migrate over to Ubuntu.Dell 7500 Workstation with Intel E5 Xeon processor64GB of RAM and 20TB of dataMySQL database to migrate over with it.First off before going any further, I noticed the only architecture for 64bit is AMD 64, so does this mean having a Dell server based on Intel, I'm dead in the water as is? If so I can just go towards SME Server, but I would rather try Ubuntu as it's a bit unique on it's own/to try something different.Or is there something unique about the 32bit version that will allow it to use the full 64GB of RAM? This is a domain controller that will also virtualize multiple other servers and other functions. Basically a ...

I am at my wits end trying to set up RAID 1 for my OS devices. I feel like I have tried everything but I always get some sort of failure back. Here's what I have done so far that has gotten me the furthest:Both devices:2GB /boot (yes it's big but I really don't care)42GB /12GB swapThat is done on both devices (side note: setting the boot flag never works, it always remains in the off position)Next, I go to configure software RAID and I set RAID 1, 2 disks, 0 spares and choose the partitions accordingly. Once finished, I have my 3 RAID devices, my first one I set to /boot, second is / and third is swap. I get down to the point where it fails to install GRUB on the second disk. I have also tri...

Hi all,Using the info in the thread: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2274467I followed the instructions verbatim, and while I can access HBONow with FF, when I click "Play", it complains that the Flash plugin is outdated, at least version 17 is required.I don't think there's a version command for Pipelight's individual plugins, but Pipelight's Flash license command refers to version 11. Code: $ pipelight-plugin --show-license flash[*] Adobe Flash Player By continuing the installation you agree that you've read and accepted the ADOBE Personal Computer Software License Agreement: http://wwwimages.adobe.com/www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/legal/licenses-t...

Hi!First off, let me say that I've searched in the forums (and the inteet) for this issue and had no luck solving it. Also, I have tried some other distros besides the one I have on the machine right now (Xubuntu 16.04) and it's all the same. The issue itself is that after I install the distro, or run the "try without installing" option, wifi stops working. The FN+F3 combination does not work, and it shows "Device not ready" when I click the coectitons icon. Now, I tried some things (just one that I can remember actually, rfkill) and got this:Wireless is not soft/hard blocked.I can hard block it/unblock it using FN+F3, but the led light never tus on, and it never gives an option to coect, it j...

Hi,My system uses HDMI audio via the optical output on the TV, I am currently using 14.04 LTS and after an upgrade audio stopped working on all apps, youtube, kodi etc. HDMI audio does work on the Left Right test in audio settings and its shown selected, so HDMI audio is not broken as it can work. After ruing the LR test the the DAC shows the HDMI audio link is working as it shows lock, however as soon as an app using audio is started the HDMI audio shuts down as the DAC shows no lock, I saw this on upgrading to 16.04 and I had USB sticks with 14.04 and 16.04 and 16.04 and audio never worked on 16.04, other than the LR test, I went back to 16.04. Any ideas?edit HW is Intel NUC Intel NUC D340...

I had install lubuntu into an old laptop and all works fine.Happens that i want to add Lumina Desktop as i think it is what LXDE should have been, and, given that the BSD developers only offers it for 64 bit systems, i had to pull the sources and the dependences and build it in my own.The Lumina website, at https://lumina-desktop.org/get-lumina/?lang=en , tells this:"Building Lumina from source on Debian/Ubuntu/Linux MintTo build the Lumian desktop from source code on any members of the Debian, Ubuntu or Linux Mint distribution (or their derivative distributions) please perform the following steps. Please note that older versions of Ubuntu (14.04 and earlier) do not ship with mode versions of...

Hi,I'm trying to do-release-upgrade from my 14.04.5 LTS box to 16.04 LTS, but do-release-upgrade tells me that either I have unofficial packages or I'm trying to upgrade from an outdated version, neither of which seems to be true. But other than this message, I can't get out the specifics of why the upgrade is not working.14.04.5 is listed among the 'current' releases: http://releases.ubuntu.com/ . this is what my system sais: Code: # lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS Release: 14.04 Codename: trusty I filed a bug on this regard, but no response: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...r/+bug/1612301What could...

I agree with the recommendation to have separate home partitions for each of the installed systems. (You can also have /home as directories inside the root directories.)If you want to share personal files (documents, music, multimedia files) I suggest that you have a separate data partition. When you have Windows alongside linux, it is a good idea to use the file system NTFS in the data partition to make it available for both linux and Windows. Otherwise you should use a linux file system (for example ext4).(Linux can also read and write the Windows [system] partition, but it is risky, it is better to have a separate data partition.)
